Mettle News - May 2015

TIP OF THE MONTH

The tip of the month is brought to you by Dr. Behfar Sanjari or Chiro-Med Rehab Centre, Richmond Hill, Ontario.  We would like to thank Dr. Sanjari for providing us with monthly tips and advice, and also for becoming our new club sponsor.

When was the last time you had your FEET checked?
Anywhere from 25 to 30 percent of all runners have feet that are normal so these individuals rarely experience pain due to regular foot-use. Long distance or sprint runners who experience foot pain could be overpronating or underpronating which means their foot turns too much or not enough when the heel strikes the ground. For these people orthotics can correct the imbalance by adjusting the angle so that the foot strikes the ground properly.
A foot that overpronates can cause a host of problems such as bunions, corns, calluses, hammer toes, hip pain, low back pain, plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis.  Should a foot underpronate this can cause pain in the arch of the foot, back pain, knee pain, impair stability, plantar fasciitis, pain in the heel, and heel spurs.
In order to maximize your ability as an athlete having your feet examined by a qualified health professional is advisable. If you’re not in that 25 to 30 percent of those with normal feet then having custom orthotics made to properly align your feet will help you to avoid injury and they can treat current foot ailments.

Dr. Sanjari can be contacted at his Richmond Hill office:  www.chiro-med.ca

Congratulations!!

During the warmer seasons, we are offered many ways to "test our mettle" on the racing scene.  Recently we had members take part in the Backs in Motion 5K and 10K road races, as well as the Sporting Life 10km.  Congratulations to all those who participated.  For race results check out Backs in Motion and Sporting Life 10km, (if you haven't already, take a few minutes to check out the new Sportstats webpage - it's very new and improved.)

We look forward to celebrating many great achievements in the 2015 season.

Reminder:  Our next club race, and first triathlon of the season, Multisport Canada Woodstock, is coming up on Sunday, June 6th.  See you there!

Club Fundraiser

On June 14th, Nike will be hosting it's inaugural Toronto Women's 15km run taking place on Toronto Island.  A lottery was held in late March for spots, and it is sure to be a great event.

If you would like to take part, but did not plan on running, here is a great opportunity for you!  Mettle Multisport has been asked to provide the lead bikers that will guide the waves of runners through the course.  For this, we will be given a generous stipend that will go towards club programming and general club improvements.  This is a great chance for us to take pride in our club and help out with a great event.  Volunteers will be provided with a shirt.  For more information please contact Deborah Velsher atThis email address is being protected from spambots. Toronto Triathlon Festival Club Challenge

This year, make the Toronto Triathlon Weekend a part of your race schedule!  It will host a club challenge and we want to get as many members as possible to join the fun!  Don't forget to wear your Mettle shirts!

Renewal Time is Here!!

Thank you to all those who have renewed with us and will be sporting their new Mettle Multisport Triathlon Club t-shirt.

For members participating in any of our off-season programs, both your Mettle Multisport Triathlon Club membership and your Triathlon Ontario membership must be renewed or you will not be permitted to continue to participate in your programs as of April 1st.

This year, rather than submit your Triathlon Ontario membership through the club, you will be renewing your TO membership online with TO (and will still be eligible for your $10 discount as a member of Mettle Multisport). This will improve turnaround time, particularly important for any of you already looking to register for an event.

As a not-for-profit club, your yearly Mettle Multisport Triathlon Club membership fee helps keep club operations – such as marketing, website hosting, credit card fees, etc. – functional.  Programming is not included in the yearly membership fees.

Find all the instructions and get going on your renewals here:

http://www.mettlemultisport.com/member-registration.html

Please note that everyone is required to complete a new membership form and waiver each year.

Mettle News - February 2015

Welcome...

We are excited to bring you the first volume of Mettle News, another interesting and eye-catching way to get the information you need on your triathlon club.

First, a thank you to Mother-Nature for giving us a "light" winter, (well, for the first part anyway).  "Light" referring to the fact that regularly scheduled outdoor running hasn't been hindered by 20 inches of snow and that no additional ice picks have been needed.  Of course toes may have frozen to the point of numbness and hands may have felt like they weren't even there, but if you planned accordingly and wore the proper gear, your were rockin!

And what about those times when the temperature was above zero degrees and the sun was shining.  Heavenly awesomeness in the middle of a somewhat drab season we Canucks endure every year.  Even though winter gear was still required, the roads were as clear as summer and the riders were out.  Cyclists rejoice for Dame Nature has granted us a few more kms on our wheels! (Ok, let's get real here. Some of us have already packed our wheels way down under to do their off-season job of collecting dust and drying laundry...)

Digressions aside, for triathletes living in Canada whose passions lie in sports that are best enjoyed outdoors, these months can be a testament to our drive and focus.  But with a good plan and some exciting indoor options, it doesn't have to be difficult and one can benefit greatly.  With crazy spinning programs, and stimulating swimming sessions, there is no shortage of alternative training methods that will push you both physically and mentally.  The greatest challenge seems to be the ability to self motivate and get up off the couch.

At Mettle Multisport, we are aiming to provide individuals with varied training options in a friendly and motivating environment.  As much as some may enjoy the darkness of the training chamber in their basement, sitting on a bike going nowhere is a lot more fun when there are twenty other people suffering just the same as you.   And donning a bathing suit in the dead of freezing cold winter is much easier when you know there are others in the pool depending on you to splash around as though the water was waves in the the ocean.

With the racing season just around the corner, (oh yes, only 4 months left until the first race), there is still time to make some positive tracks towards seasonal goals and personal bests.  We will be sending out our club race schedule soon and we are looking forward to seeing members testing their mettle.

Announcing the new Mettle Multisport Board of Directors

Renewal Time is Here

It is that time of year again: time to renew your Mettle Multisport and Triathlon Ontario (TO) memberships!  This year we are doing things a little differently. Rather than submit your TO membership through the club, you will be renewing your TO membership online with TO (and will still be eligible for your $10 discount as a member of Mettle Multisport). This will improve turnaround time, particularly important for any of you already looking to register for an event.

We're looking for Club Sponsors

We would like to start by thanking Goldfinger Personal Injury Law (our lead sponsor), Dealathons.com, Balance Physiotherapy and XBASE Technologies for being our sponsors over the last year. Thanks to them, we were able to provide all Mettle members with technical T-shirts and offered free swim workouts for much of last summer. We hope all of our sponsors continue to support us as we start our new year.

We would also like to get all of you engaged in identifying new sponsors. Sponsors can be sports-related businesses (such as bike shops), health-related businesses (such as physio and chiro practices), restaurants (at which we can hold Mettle social events), and other businesses that want to show their support for Mettle, our members, and an active lifestyle. We are in the process of revamping our sponsorship program to provide as much value as possible to our sponsors.

In addition to club sponsors, we also have club supporters that provide discounts to Mettle members. You can find current club supporters here:

http://www.mettlemultisport.com/Mettle-Static-Content/discounts.html

Feel free to reach out to any potential sponsors directly, or send us a note at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will get in touch with them.

Pictures and Video!

We need your pictures and videos!  We want to get as many pictures up on the Mettle website as we can!  We would also like to start posting videos to our website and to YouTube. Please send any club related pictures that you want posted to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
