TIP OF THE MONTH
The tip of the month is brought to you by Dr. Behfar Sanjari or Chiro-Med Rehab Centre, Richmond Hill, Ontario. We would like to thank Dr. Sanjari for providing us with monthly tips and advice, and also for becoming our new club sponsor.
When was the last time you had your FEET checked?
Anywhere from 25 to 30 percent of all runners have feet that are normal so these individuals rarely experience pain due to regular foot-use. Long distance or sprint runners who experience foot pain could be overpronating or underpronating which means their foot turns too much or not enough when the heel strikes the ground. For these people orthotics can correct the imbalance by adjusting the angle so that the foot strikes the ground properly.
A foot that overpronates can cause a host of problems such as bunions, corns, calluses, hammer toes, hip pain, low back pain, plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis. Should a foot underpronate this can cause pain in the arch of the foot, back pain, knee pain, impair stability, plantar fasciitis, pain in the heel, and heel spurs.
In order to maximize your ability as an athlete having your feet examined by a qualified health professional is advisable. If you’re not in that 25 to 30 percent of those with normal feet then having custom orthotics made to properly align your feet will help you to avoid injury and they can treat current foot ailments.
