The summer program begins Monday, May 1, 2017 and runs through the beginning of September.
Swim, Ride & Brick Run
Swim: 6:30 - 7:30 AM
Ride: 8:00 AM

Choose to swim, ride or do both on Saturday mornings!
We'll have the whole pool Saturday mornings, moving to the outdoor pool when it opens mid-June!
The Saturday ride will include hills, lots of intersections, varying road conditions, traffic and inclement weather.  Distances will vary according to experience, skill level and race distance. All skill levels and distances are welcome.  We will stay together as one large group for the warmup and then break into groups based on ability and distance.  This affords all members the opportunity to warm up properly, practice drafting, bike handling skills and ride as a cohesive group.  For those going a shorter distance, you will ride back with your buddy/group.  During the ride we will address various skills such as stopping and unclipping at intersections, and reinforcing those skills practiced at our Wednesday workout. Nutrition and hydration become more important so that energy levels are adequate during the ride and enhance the ability to recover.   There will also be the opportunity to do a brick run at the end of the bike, so the legs can practice running in a fatigued state.

Tempo Run
Mondays, 7:00 PM
Schwartz/Reisman Centre (9600 Bathurst Street, north of Rutherford)
We will continue tempo workouts throughout the summer season.  These workouts will involve longer tempo repeats which will directly incorporate race pacing while running on reasonably challenging courses. Within the large group, all participants will work together in small groups or buddy up with another Mettlehead according to skill level and race distance.

Tuesdays, 9:30 - 10:30 PM starting mid-June
Again, we'll have the whole indoor pool giving us lots of room for drills, endurance sets and speed work!

Bike Speedwork & Brick Run
Wednesdays, 7:00 PM
Schwartz/Reisman Centre (9600 Bathurst Street, north of Rutherford)
Cycling groups will be organized based on individual abilities – everyone will buddy up during warm up and cool down, both as a safety issue and for moral support! The group will ride out to the workout location as one large group and in most cases for the return journey as well.   Sessions will include an introduction to outdoor cycling skills and safety, road riding in a group, and hand signals. Members will learn cycling techniques including proper aerodynamic positioning, pacing, cadence, bike handling, and proper shifting.  The workouts include tempos, hills and repeat bricks.  As well, our periodic pre-scheduled time trials (a highlight of last season) will allow members to gauge their improvement from last season and over the summer session. The evening will also include perfecting bike to run transitions, (including a short run), what to expect when your legs hit the ground after cycling, and proper triathlon cycling etiquette to prepare you for racing events.
